Job Planning Fundamentals - Detailed Planning
In this first course of our Job Planning Fundamentals series for heavy industry maintenance and projects, you will learn the importance of detailed planning, creating effective step-out plans from an approved scope of work and a well-defined scope of scope (scope of work details). You will also gain insight into estimating fundamentals and standards, which will be covered in more detail in subsequent courses.
Creating effective step-out plans is one of the first actions taken by an assigned planner, related to detailed planning in conjunction with templates and standards from Prepac® Systems Methodology (PSM). This action is crucial for delivering maximum value to customers of planning services, including direct workers at the workface (focused on safety, quality, and efficiency) and key stakeholders in both the field and boardroom (emphasizing physical production asset reliability, infrastructure integrity, and shareholder value).
Detailed planning begins with creating effective step-out plans with realistic, just-right estimates. The key is to understand how much or how little detailed planning is required and how to estimate the right number (and amount) of resources (human, time, materials, and budget) to meet end-user expectations and target performance deliverables. In this course, you will learn about the need to create a balance between planning effort and return on planning investment; after all, planning services are an indirect overhead cost to an organization, or billable to a client. Therefore, as a planner, you need to ensure that planning services add just the right amount of detail to create a balance between the cost of services and the value received.
