Variations of Planning for Heavy Industry
Welcome to Variations of Planning for Heavy Industry, the final course in a series of five basic courses for maintenance and project planning! In this course, you will explore the planning basics for various types of work related to three key categories: routine maintenance, shutdowns/turnarounds/outages, and capital projects.
Maintenance encompasses routine, major, overhauls, shutdowns, turnarounds, outages, and corrective actions in order to maintain reliable production (mitigating risk); whereas, projects are planned and executed to enhance production (return on investment).
In previous courses, you learned that the value of maintenance and project planning is delivered through planning services. This function serves the asset management team (AMT) and the project management pffice (PMO) by providing timely, accurate, and consistent job plans and packages. These preparations are essential for effective scheduling, efficient execution, and precise follow-up. The work categories necessary for maintaining reliable production—routine major, or shutdown/turnaround/outage—along with those aimed at increasing production, such as maintenance and capital projects, share similarities in planning. However, they also have key differences that are foundational for developing specialized knowledge and skills specific to advanced planning for maintenance or projects.
